The Norrbotnia line gives the full effect of the investments

Construction of the Norrbotnia line began in 2018 in Umeå with a view to Skellefteå, which takes the line halfway. During the summer, the government came with the message to the Swedish Transport Administration to start planning between Skellefteå and Luleå.

There is an urgent need to complete the Norrbotnia line in its entirety. At present, there is not a single meter of rail that connects the cities along the coastal route.

– This despite the fact that it is as densely populated as Västra Götaland County. In fact, in shared third place after Stockholm and Skåne counties! Says Elisabeth Sinclair, project manager for the Norrbotnia line group.

The Norrbotnia line will deliver full societal benefits only when it is fully completed.

– We would of course like to see the project accelerated even more, but have a full understanding of the complex processes that a railway construction entails, Elisabeth Sinclair continues.

Investments for more than SEK 700 billion are being made and planned in Västerbotten and Norrbotten. These are figures that clearly show the region’s growth potential. Investments are also mainly concentrated along the coastal stretch between Umeå and Luleå, which makes the need for the Norrbotnia line even more urgent.

It is an expansive region that is gaining ground thanks in large part to its sustainable offerings.

– It is, for example, about large contributions to energy supply, bioeconomy and the use of green technology. It attracts companies and investments from all over the world.

The Norrbotnia line is something that the business community longs for, not least to secure its supply of skills. Right now, the labor market regions along the coast are separated and concentrated in each city and surrounding area.

– With the Norrbotnia line, we get a strong coastal stretch that also benefits rural development, concludes Elisabeth Sinclair.
