Rejection of Swedish wind farm – would support the steel industry

The Land and Environmental Court in Östersund has rejected the plans for a wind farm offshore Gävle.

The reason why Svea Vind Offshore’s application is rejected is that the applicant has not met the requirements of the Environmental Code for consultation with those who may be particularly affected by the operation, the court writes in a press release.

The wind farm Utposten 2 was to be built 15 kilometers from the mainland to the sea east of Axmar Bruk. The competitor WPD, which already has a permit in the waters with its project Storgrundet, presented views on this during the court proceedings in Gävle in August, writes Gefle Dagblad.

Formal deficiency

– There is a formal deficiency in that they did not consult with the competitor who already has a permit nearby. They should have consulted with a so-called boundary consultation, but they didn’t, says Lars-Göran Bennmarker, chief councilor at the Land and Environmental Court who led the negotiations, to GD.

The Land and Environmental Court gives WPD the right in its judgment and since the environmental impact statement was not approved, the court has not taken a position on the content of the application regarding the number of wind turbines, height of the wind turbines and conditions for the permit.

32 wind turbines

Svea Vind Offshore’s application consisted of 32 wind turbines with a total height of a maximum of 350 metres. According to the company, the approximately 1.8 terawatt hours per year that Utposten 2 was supposed to produce would constitute an important contribution to the region’s steel-intensive industry, which is facing an increasing need for renewable energy.

During a conference on energy security in the Baltic Sea area in August, it was decided that the countries around the Baltic Sea should increase offshore wind power sevenfold. The goal is a capacity of at least 19.6 gigawatts of wind power in the Baltic Sea in 2030, an increase from today’s 2.8 gigawatts.

The start of construction for Outposten 2 was planned for the year 2025 and the wind turbines were to be commissioned in the latter part of 2027.
