Largest manufacturers of batteries for electric vehicles: Catl extends the lead
Chinese Catl remains unchallenged first on the top list of the largest manufacturers of batteries for electric vehicles. But the new runner-up BYD is on a fast march forward.
The European effort to build a value chain for the production of lithium-ion batteries notwithstanding – the top ten list of the world’s largest manufacturers of batteries for electric and hybrid cars is still completely dominated by Asian companies. It shows one compilation made by the Korean research company SNE Researchwhich applies to the period January to November 2022.
At the top is still Chinese Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (Catl), with a market share of 37.1 percent. This is an increase of 5 percentage points compared to the same period last year. The company’s total cell production amounted to 165.7 GWh, more than doubling compared to the previous year.
Build Your Dream
In second place there is a shift. China’s Build Your Dream (BYD) increases to a market share of 13.6 percent, thus passing Korea’s LG Energy Solution, which reaches up to 12.3 percent.
Most companies have carried out a sharp increase in production in January-November 2022 compared to the same period the year before. Half of the companies on the top ten list have more than doubled it. The largest increase is accounted for by nine Chinese Sunwoda, which performed almost fourfold – but from a relatively low level.
Electric cars keep going
The increase is driven by sales of pure electric cars, such as the VW ID 4 and Mustang Mach-E (LG Energy Solutions), Audi E-Tron, BMW i4 and Fiat 500 (Samsung SDI) and Tesla Model 3 and Y (Catl).
The total energy storage capacity installed in newly registered electric and hybrid cars during the period amounted to 446 GWh, and is based on collected data from 80 countries.
