Good speed in China – then Ericsson raises the 5g forecast
The growth of new 5G subscriptions is going faster than expected, at least according to telecom builder Ericsson’s new mobility report.
At the end of the third quarter, there were 570 million subscriptions with the new telecom technology 5G. Ericsson thus revises the previous forecast to a total of 660 million subscriptions by the end of 2021, from the previous 580 million. The reason for the stronger growth is better speed than expected in China and North America.
By the end of 2027, 4.4 billion 5G subscriptions are expected, which will then correspond to about half of all the world’s mobile subscriptions. At the same time, 75 percent of the world’s population is estimated to live in areas covered by 5G networks.
Over the past year, data traffic in mobile networks has increased by 42 percent. In 2027, 5G networks will account for 62 percent of all smartphone traffic, according to the Ericsson report.
