Apple works with technology where “gadgets charge each other”

The iPhone manufacturer is said to continue working with a charging mat for several gadgets. At the same time, Apple is developing a new technology for wireless charging at a distance, reports Bloomberg.

Apple has not given up on the dream of building a gadget that can charge multiple gadgets at once. In parallel, the Iphone manufacturer is preparing for a future where gadgets can charge each other. It reports Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.

Spiritual heir to “Airpower”

Few gadgets have had such a mass media impact as “Airpower” – without even being released. Apple’s multi-charger was presented for the first time in 2017, when it was announced that the gadget could be used to charge Iphone, Apple Watch and Airpods – at the same time.

But a few years later, the project was discontinued – which has been described as one of the company’s “Most embarrassing moments” in recent years.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is now continuing to work with a kind of multi-charger that can be seen as a spiritual heir to “Airpower”. The gadget is said to be based on induction charging, but should, unlike wireless Magsafe and Magsafe Duo, be able to load more than two things at once.

“Focuses on bidirectional charging”

In addition, Apple is said to be in the process of developing a new technology that enables wireless power transmission also at a distance, according to Bloomberg.

But according to Mark Gurman, Apple also dreams of a future where a kind of two-way charging between Apple gadgets can become a reality.

“Imagine an iPad charging an Iphone, which can then be used to charge the batteries in an Apple Watch or Airpods,” writes Gurman.

Android is one step ahead

Bloomberg’s article does not say how far Apple has come in its development work, but it will probably take several years before we can see the technology in gadgets released on the market.

At arch-rival Android, however, bidirectional charging is already a reality – for example, Huawei and Samsung, among others, have support for a similar technology.
