The first airport will soon open for taxi drones – powered by fuel cells

Europe will be first. In April, the first airport for taxi drones will open on the initiative of Hyundai.

Many people believe in eVTOL as the mode of transport of the future, ie electrically powered autonomous aircraft that take off and land vertically. One company that is investing heavily in this area is Hyundai. In addition to its own drone taxi with room for four, the Korean car giant has ordered 65 mini-airports intended for the type of vehicle.

They will be built by British Urban-Air Port, and the first will be inaugurated as early as April, reports Proactive. It will be Coventry in the western Midlands of England that gets what is claimed to be the world’s first airport specifically designed for eVTOL.

Until the day when the traffic is released, the hub must be open to the public. The airport will not need to be connected to the electricity grid, but will receive its power supply via fuel cells – and already has an agreement with a supplier of hydrogen.

In November, Hyundai announced that their Urban Air Mobility Division changes its name to Supernal – and by 2025, the car giant will invest SEK 13.8 billion in new aviation infrastructure. The money will be enough for another 200 so-called vertiports around the world.

Already at CES 2020 Hyundai showed off a full-scale version of its aircraft, which is intended to be used by Uber Elevate. It should have a cruising speed of 290 km / h, at an altitude of 300-600 meters – then with a range of 100 km. And it should only take 5-7 minutes to charge the battery. The spacecraft is scheduled to fly in 2028.
