Refuel now – sharp increase on New Year’s Day
On Thursday, the gas stations raised fuel prices by up to 25 öre. But there is nothing against what awaits after the turn of the year – then the diesel can blow up the 20-kronor embankment.
The fuel chains raised the price of petrol by 25 öre per liter to SEK 17.44. At the same time, the diesel became 20 öre more expensive and after the increase costs more than SEK 19 per liter, more precisely 19:07, according to the recommended prices for manned stations. This is after the world market price of crude oil has picked up again.
Despite the increase – a good idea is still to fill the tank before the turn of the year, especially for car owners who drive on diesel. Because on New Year’s Day, a new, much juicier surcharge awaits, in the order of around 80 öre per liter for diesel and maybe around 30 öre for petrol.
At least as much
The reason is mainly the increased obligation to reduce, ie the demand for more involved, renewable fuels in diesel and petrol. The last time the reduction obligation increased, in August earlier this year, the diesel price rose by around 75 öre per liter including VAT.
Lennart Olsson, responsible for pricing of fuel on Circle K, can not say the exact increase now at the turn of the year.
– But it will be at least at the same level, he says.
The background to the substantial increases is that biofuels are more expensive than the fossil fuels.
– And the price of renewable fuels has risen sharply this year, says Lennart Olsson.
Increased tax
And the fuel tax is just as expensive no matter how much renewable diesel and petrol it contains. That tax will also be increased by eight and ten öre for diesel and petrol at the turn of the year.
In total, the diesel may have blown up the SEK 20 embankment a few hours after the New Year’s bells have rung in the new year. The increase in petrol will be more modest in this context, perhaps 30 öre.
The fact that diesel has deducted the petrol price so sharply in the past year is connected with the fact that it is possible to mix in significantly more and more expensive renewables in diesel. The petrol engines do not handle the same amount of biofuel.
Facts: There will be more
The bill on the reduction obligation was presented in the spring of 2021. At that time, the government judged that each annual step taken in the obligation results in a price increase of 15-25 öre per liter of petrol and 40-60 öre per liter of diesel. With VAT on top, it will be an additional 6 to 15 öre at the pump.
In August this year, the latest step was taken in tightening up the reduction obligation. This meant that the price of diesel at the pump rose by about 75 öre per liter and at the turn of the year, as mentioned, an approximately equal increase is expected.
According to the government’s calculations in the bill, the obligation can increase the price of diesel by up to SEK 5 and 40 öre per liter until 2030. For petrol, the increase would be up to SEK 2 and 90 öre per liter. With VAT, it will be 25 percent more. But it depends on how the price development is for biofuels.
