It is now five years since the latest generation of the BMW X5 saw the light of day. Since 2019, the crossover has been offered in a plug-in hybrid version, and in Sweden, this makes up around 80 percent of sales.

Now it’s time for an update, and then the German manufacturer chooses to do a lot. In terms of appearance, the front has been changed with narrower headlights, arrow-shaped design of the low beams and a revised bumper. The rear lights and shock absorbers have also received a new design.

The biggest design change, however, has taken place on the inside, where the old has been thrown out and instead the curved screen and the latest infotainment system have been inserted. This means that you then get the same screen and digital experience as in the new electric cars.

When it comes to the drivetrain, this has received a thorough review. Previously, the plug-in hybrid model went by the name Xdrive45e. This has been changed to Xdrive50e and the higher number is an indication that more power has been tweaked – and not so little either.

The six-cylinder engine has had its output increased by 27 horsepower and now generates 313 hp. The electric motor that is integrated in the automatic transmission has also received higher output and now delivers 145 kW/197 horsepower (+62 kW/84 hp). In total, this means that the maximum system power has been increased by 96 horsepower and now the official figure is 490 horsepower.

The power increase is also reflected in the acceleration, and now anyone who dares can get from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

But it’s not all about horsepower and acceleration. The battery pack has also become larger, and with a net capacity of 25.7 kWh, it is about 25 percent larger than before. This means that under favorable conditions you should be able to drive 110 km on pure electricity.

In addition to the larger battery, BMW has also upgraded the on-board charger and now the car can be charged at 7.4 kW.

The new version of the X5 plug-in hybrid starts production in April and for those who are convinced, it is possible to place an order now. But quality costs. X5 Xdrive50e starts at SEK 995,000.
