The EU gives the go-ahead for the review of electricity areas

Proposals to change the division of Sweden’s four electricity areas into fewer may be presented next summer. Today, the price differences between southern and northern Sweden are enormous.

The EU’s electricity authority Acer has given Sweden the go-ahead to carry out such a review, which could result in four options, some of which involve three electricity areas.

The proposals are based on where the bottlenecks in the electricity system are estimated to be in 2025, according to Svenska Kraftnät.

Change can only take place in 2025

“A proposal to change or maintain will be submitted to the government in July 2023,” writes Svenska Kraftnät in a press release.

If there is a change, the authority sees that such a change can take place in 2025 at the earliest.

Criticized division

The background to the review is the very large price differences between northern and southern Sweden – which has led to criticism.

The purpose of the division into four electricity areas, which was introduced over ten years ago, is among other things to stimulate new electricity production where the price is high.
