Many have symptoms one year after covid-19

Every second patient hospitalized for covid-19 still has symptoms one year later.

It is in the journal The Lancet that researchers tell about how it has been for the Chinese patients a year after they had been treated in a hospital in Wuhan in China, writes Dagens Medicin.

In total, there are 1,300 women and men whose average age was 59 years and where follow-ups were made six and twelve months after discharge, respectively.

After six months, 68 percent of the patients had at least one symptom left that could be linked to the infection, a figure that had decreased to 49 percent at the twelve-month follow-up. Muscle weakness and fatigue were the most commonly reported complaints on both occasions. Among those who worked, 88 percent had returned to their previous job after twelve months.

One weakness of the study, the researchers write, is that the patients come from one and the same hospital, Jin Yin-tan Hospital, so it is not certain that the results apply to patients in other areas or countries.
