Everything we know about the upcoming electric car Polestar 3

An aerodynamic performance SUV with electric drive – that’s how Polestar 3 is described. But what else do we know about the car to come? Here, Ny Teknik collects the most credible information about the upcoming electric car.

2022-05-23: Then Polestar 3 can be ordered

During a presentation of the electric car manufacturer’s introduction of 2022, Polestar revealed that sales are going like the train – and that it will increase significantly when the new SUV also arrives.

– We believe that our future growth will accelerate further thanks to the fact that we will enter the lucrative SUV market later this year when it becomes the world premiere of the long-awaited electric performance SUV Polestar 3 in October. Polestar 3, which will be manufactured in the US and China, will be different from other SUVs and strengthen our growth on the way to the next phase, said Thomas Ingenlath.

Furthermore, Polestar states that the SUV market is one of the segments with the highest growth and margins in the automotive industry, especially in the United States. And they want that cake when they state that customers are expected to be able to order a Polestar 3 on the premiere day in October.

2021-12-03: New picture of Polestar 3

Now Polestar has taken the veil off the upcoming SUV 3 – however, what we get to see is both camouflaged and set at a distance – so no real details can be ascertained yet.

“Polestar 3 is an electric performance SUV of the highest class that is planned to be launched in 2022. It will define the look of SUVs in the electric age,” says Thomas Ingenlath, the company’s head, in a statement.

Judging by the design, it seems that the headlights get an assigned “stripe” on the hood similar to those on the Precept concept. Furthermore, the side rear-view mirrors appear to be the same as on the Polestar 2, ie without a thick edge.

A question mark is where the lidar sensor is located. Various prototypes and concepts that use the technology have had it up above the windshield – but on Polestar 3 it is very empty there.

2019-09-15: Ingenlath gives details about Polestar 3

Polestar has been very sparing with details when it comes to the upcoming SUV. But during the car show in Munich, the CEO Thomas Ingenlath lifted the lid a bit and revealed a couple of things.

The first concerns the design. Already when Polestar sent out information that the car would be built in Volvo’s US factory, among other things – we got to see a silhouette picture.

The car shares platform and base with Volvo’s replacement for the XC90. But the picture showed a fairly low roofline and now Ingenlath confirms that the Polestar car will only have two rows of seats, the newspaper writes Car and Driver.

– I have nothing against three lines as such, but the second we would insert one – had you in the media started asking what the difference was against an XC90.

More then? The head of upholstery said that if you ignore the possibility of a third row of seats, you get gains in aerodynamics – but also in how you can position the first and second row.

The confirmation that Polestar 3 will not be the option for those who want a seat with more than five was not the only thing Thomas Ingelath revealed to the newspaper. He was also into the more technical.

The newspaper writes that he promises a driveline whose top position will be unique to Polestar. That is, with a power output that is above what Volvo will offer in its XC90 replacement.

In addition, alternatives with longer power, as well as alternatives with only one engine will be launched.

– I see it as a good combination. Dual engines have more power and acceleration – but when it comes down to it, many people do not need it. And there are also many who are not in need of four-wheel drive, said Thomas Ingenlath.

Overview – Polestar 3

It is now four years since Polestar was launched as its own brand. Since then, they have launched the charging hybrid “1” and the electric car “2”. The first was a glider car, so-called Grand tourer, the second was a five-seater sedan with a hatchback.

But now the machinery for Polestar 3 is starting up.

Before the summer came the first indication that the model is in the subjects when the manufacturer sent out a picture and the information that the car will be built in China (for Europe / China) and in the USA (for the North American market).

Technique

Polestar 3 will be the first model from the Volvo Car Group to build on a new platform. Or as the manufacturer would like to point out – the first to be designed from the ground up for full electrification.

Furthermore, it will be fully connected with everything that is included in Google Automotive’s software arsenal and have “advanced and safety-focused autonomous driving functions.

Design

The cover image that Polestar sent out in connection with the revelation of where the model was to be built shows an exciting silhouette.

On the one hand, it is possible to see that the roof line is long and slightly sloping with a small roof spoiler. This means that the manufacturer does not intend to make a coupe SUV á la Audi / BMW / Mercedes – at least not initially. Furthermore, the car has prominent wheel arches and something that looks like very angular exterior mirrors. Whether the latter are cameras is still too early to say.

When will Polestar 3 be released?

Global production of Polestar 3 will start in 2022.

Award

In connection with Polestar revealing that it will take a shortcut to the Nasdaq stock exchange – it was also revealed what we can expect for the price level on Polestar 3. And for those who had hoped that it would be low, unfortunately. The player you want to elbow with belongs to the other end of the spectrum.

Thomas Ingenlath, the company’s CEO, said during the presentation that the Polestar 3 will be priced to compete with the Porsche Cayenne. This means that we can expect a price that is north of SEK 800,000.

As more information becomes available, the article will be updated.
